The new build is an Excel-class ship, similar to the Mardi Gras and her sister ship, the soon-to-be-launched Carnival Celebration. While Celebration will be added to the fleet in 2023 as part of the line’s 50th anniversary, the still-unnamed new ship, originally built for AIDA Cruises, is expected to welcome guests in 2023.
Meanwhile, the Costa Magica, which has sailed for Carnival Corporation’s Italian division, Costa Crociere, since 2004, is moving to Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet, where it will look at least a little familiar to some passengers. Finally, the Magica was designed by Carnival’s favorite architect, Joe Farkus, who used the same basic design as the Destiny-class ships.

Of course, the original ships that make up this class – Carnival Destiny, Triumph and Victory – have been radically renovated in recent years, giving them the name Sunshine Class. Destiny was renamed Carnival Sunshine in 2013, Triumph became Carnival Sunrise in 2019, and despite delays, the conversion of Victory to Carnival Radiance is expected to be completed by November this year.
Carnival says the Magica will go through a dry dock (during which it will be modified to be more in line with the Carnival brand) and be renamed before joining the fleet in mid-2022. It is not known if she will be able to join the new Sunshine class, like the other Destiny class ships.
We are very pleased with our fleet expansion, said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. It reflects Carnival’s strong position in the U.S., pent-up demand for cruises and Carnival Corporation’s overall plans to optimize capacity and growth in key markets.
She added that while the company’s immediate goal is to resume operations with customers this summer, this is another cause for excitement at Carnival and we will be announcing more detailed plans for home ports, itineraries and ship names very soon.
