Cruise Industry Celebrates International Day of the Seafarer

Today, February 1st, is the International Day of Seafarers, an annual celebration of the maritime industry and the seafaring culture. Every year, Seafarers Day is celebrated through a global program of activities and events. On this day, seafarers worldwide come together to celebrate their profession, culture and contribution to society.

The International Seafarer Day is celebrated every year on the 11th August, which is the anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Convention on the International Seaman. This day is a tribute to the men and women that endeavour to make a living from the sea. They are the unsung heroes of the world.

In the past few years, the cruise industry has begun to make a name for itself as a major tourist attraction. June is International Seafarers Day, and Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) joins the global cruise industry in celebrating it.

This year’s special theme is A Fair Future for Seafarers.

International cruise ship crew members are the backbone of the cruise industry and of every memorable cruise experience. More than ever, crew members are important not only for the enjoyment of the ship, but also for the health and safety of the cruise lines, which protect all passengers.

This year’s International Day of Seafarers has special significance for the cruise industry. After 15 long and difficult months, there is finally hope on the horizon for the more than one million people for whom cruise tourism is a livelihood, including more than 200,000 seafarers, said Kelly Craighead, President and CEO of CLIA.

On behalf of the entire cruise community around the world, we are honored to recognize the hardworking men and women who are the heart and soul of every voyage and who work behind the scenes and on the front lines for public health and safety. Our community is immensely grateful to the sailors, because thanks to them, our industry can once again offer travelers one of the best ways to experience the world.

While cruise lines continue to slowly bring their ships into service, research by CLIA and booking trends from the cruise lines themselves show that demand for cruises remains strong. And one of the most interesting and unique aspects of a cruise compared to other vacation options is the friendliness and helpfulness of the crew members on the ships.

Here are some facts about seafarers in the cruise industry:

• Prior to COVID, CLIA’s ocean cruise lines employed over 200,000 seafarers from over 100 countries.
• In light of the closed borders and travel restrictions, cruise lines have made significant efforts to bring crew members home over the past year, including using their own ships to bring crew members home.
• Cruise lines invest heavily in attracting the best employees and offer crew members competitive wages and benefits.
• Cruise lines compete for talented crew members by offering appropriate and competitive terms, as required by the Maritime Labor Agreement. Cruise lines can receive up to 100 applicants for each crew vacancy.
