Carnival Reveals New Muster Drill, Teases Dining Changes
Carnival Corp. Tuesday unveiled what it said would become its industry’s first cruise ship-wide drill based on a new Leadership Code of Conduct that it said would improve training and enhance crew safety. The two-day drill, which began Tuesday, has been held on every Carnival Corp. ship every day since spring 2009. A third drill, themed “Honoring the Spirit of the Crew,” will be held Wednesday.
Carnival Corp. today launched a new boarding drill, known as a muster drill, for its four remaining Carnival Cruise Line ships. The boats – Carnival Inspiration, Carnival Conquest, Carnival Valor and Carnival Liberty – are all scheduled to be in the Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas in the coming weeks to participate in what Carnival said is the first-ever drill for a large cruise ship fleet.
Carnival Cruises has introduced a new drilling exercise that will give the ship’s emergency workers a bit more practice at the same time that it introduces changes to the ship’s restaurant. The company’s recent changes to dining include the introduction of an all-day buffet in the main dining room and the end of the complimentary coffee bar in the lobby lounge.. Friday morning, brand ambassador John Heald informed his Facebook followers of a very big change: No more big meetings with safety briefings, he shared.
How Carnival’s new mushroom drill works
The age-old process of gathering passengers – in the waiting room or outside – until everyone is counted and the security check can begin is getting a much-needed update.
As Heald explained, the new process – which is no less mandatory than its outdated predecessor – will work as follows:
1. The letter number or pickup location will be listed on the hub request and boarding pass. According to Hield, this is another good reason to download the Hub app, as it provides easier access to information about training test locations. This allows guests to go directly to their check-in station so as not to disrupt other boarding day activities.
2. Arriving at your assembly point, you will find a designated carnival staff member who will register you and confirm that you know the location of the assembly point. This is the most important place to remember on your trip, Heald said. There is nothing more important than knowing how to save your life in an emergency. The application not only tells you where your collection point is, but also gives you a route to get there easily.
3. The final step, Heald said, is for guests to go to their stateroom sometime before the ship departs and watch a safety presentation video voiced by Carnival’s head peddler, Shaquille O’Neal. He added that they are able to determine whether or not people have participated in the estate plan and that there is a record for those who have not participated.
Although these new measures appear to have been introduced to prevent overpopulation in an era of social exclusion, Heald noted that they could be in effect long after the current health crisis is over. I speak not as a representative of Carnival, but as a cruise director who has made many announcements from the bridge, he said. If it works now, that’s how we’ll do our lineups or safety briefings in the years to come.
Last summer, the Royal Caribbean Group unveiled an app-based eMuster safety exercise. The company proposes to license the patented technology to interested cruise lines and waive the patent fees for each cruise line that wishes to use it.
On the other hand, Heald hinted that there would be a difference at lunch. It’s a little different, and I’ll talk about that next week, because the last piece of the puzzle will be installed early next week. However, no further information was provided.
Carnival plans to resume its nearly fully vaccinated cruises (95 percent of guests and 98 percent of crew) next weekend, starting with the Carnival Vista departing Galveston on July 3, followed by the Carnival Horizon departing Miami the next day. The Carnival Breeze, Carnival Miracle and Mardi Gras will also sail in July.
