Celebrity Apex Trip Report, Day 3: Mykonos and Celebrity Flights
Everybody loves a celebrity. Whether they are love them or hate them, there is no denying that people see them as role models. Perhaps it is because they seem to have it all, perhaps they are just interesting, or perhaps it is because they are human. Regardless of the reason, people want to get a glimpse of Hollywood, and if that involves taking a flight on a private jet to Mykonos and then hopping onto a private yacht with a celebrity, so be it.
Mykonos’ highlight of the trip for me was the scenery. Ceos is a small island and walking around it you can find gorgeous beaches and aqua blue water. On the other side you find gorgeous villas with the most over the top architecture, I couldn’t help but think of movies I’ve seen like “The English Patient” and “The Shining”.
Wow, what an amazing day. The weather was perfect, the sun was shining, I had a nice breakfast, then spent the day on the water, taking pictures, swimming in the sea with the local kids and eating at the best restaurants on the island. The food here is so good, although I don’t miss the food in the US too much.
Editor’s comment: Our correspondent recently traveled from the United States to Athens, Greece, to prepare for the Celebrity Apex’s maiden voyage. Here is her trip report for the third day of the trip where she visited Mykonos, Greece and talks about Celebrity’s packages.
My day began with anticipation, as my excursion today will immerse me in the world of Greek cuisine. A few minutes before the scheduled meeting, my personal host escorted me to the theater where the excursion groups usually meet.
My tickets for all excursions on this Celebrity Apex cruise arrived on the first day of the cruise.
The procedure is simple. Once in the theater, I went to the table where I was given a sticker with the group tour number, which I put on my shirt to identify myself. After I got the group number, I looked for a specific seat that matched that number and waited for that number to be called.
The system seems to work very efficiently, although the first day I had to wait over 45 minutes before my group number was called, but that was a fluke.
After the call, the ship’s guide will direct the group to the next meeting point, whether that is a bus with the same group number or a guide waiting at the ship. In the case of Santorini, we were on a tender.
Before the tour starts, the local guide takes the ticket and tears off the strip. To facilitate communication and maintain an appropriate social distance, all participants in the tour will be equipped with headphones.
At the end of the tour we were sometimes given QR codes to send comments. These reviews are extremely useful, so don’t forget to send them in.
Cooking with Theta
After leaving the port of Mykonos by shuttle bus, our small group arrived at the Mykonian Spiti (that’s the Greek name for a house) and Theta, our cooking teacher, warmly welcomed us into her beautiful home. She led us straight into the quiet courtyard where she gave us a brief overview of Mykonos.
After being served a cherry liqueur reminiscent of cough syrup, a drink with rose water and a dash of raki, we retreated to the kitchen of the house. The cooking demonstration was actually the dining room of Teta’s Spiti and radiated the warmth of our wonderful host.
What made this trip unforgettable was Theta herself. His sense of humor really added to the experience.
She encouraged everyone to participate in the preparation of the dishes we enjoyed. His knowledge of ingredients and cooking techniques made us captivated listeners. Did you know there are male and female peppers and which one is best for cooking? What is the difference between the American pinch and the Greek pinch?
We prepared several dishes, including stuffed tomatoes and peppers, spinach pie and, of course, tzatziki. At the end of the demonstration, a tzatziki contest was held. Several members of our group took on the tzatziki challenge and made this traditional cucumber sauce using the same recipe.
Theta did her own blind tasting to determine the winner. She explained that there are ways to improve losing bids and turn them into winning ones. The secret is to let the flavors infuse a little longer.
After the cooking demonstration, Theta served a deliciously prepared lunch featuring some of the dishes we sampled. Seeing the size of the portions, I asked my tablemate if it was considered rude in Greece to leave food on his plate. Yes! I have not won any awards for Clean Plate Club or culinary arts.
Our time at Theta flew by and we left with parting gifts, including crawfish and recipes for everything we ate that day. I highly recommend this excursion. Book it before you arrive on the ship.
Mykonos enjoys
Back on the Celebrity Apex, I cooled off (the temperature was very high) and headed back to the Destination Gateway on deck 2. There was a free bus to the center waiting for me. Celebrity provides free shuttle services so you can explore the ports on your own.
The iconic images of windmills that I have seen so many times have dominated my thoughts about Mykonos, as well as the movie set on Mykonos, Shirley Valentine. I joined a fellow student from the morning cooking class and we found a cafe overlooking the ocean and enjoyed the view and the wine. (I should note that my fellow passengers on the Celebrity Apex were extremely friendly and very easy to get to know).
After a short time on the beach, satisfying my need to relive a scene from the movie and enjoy the view; I returned to the Celebrity Apex by shuttle bus, although I considered taking a water taxi just for the experience. The water taxi was leaving just as I got there though, so I took the shuttle.
It is Greek to me
These Athens Apex sightseeing flights began in June due to COVID-19 and will continue throughout the summer and early fall, so be prepared for warmer temperatures during your trip.
But also expect fewer visitors in ports of call and unparalleled crew service. The crew members I spoke to were just as happy as the guests to be back on the high seas. This is an excellent opportunity to travel with fewer people on the ship and in the port. I have heard that several passengers on that first flight extended their stay for another week.
Until the end of September, Celebrity has a special offer on flights to Athens. As part of this promotion, Celebrity Apex is offering cruise fares starting at $699, specifically for these Greek islands and Athens only. Currently, these special offers are only valid until the end of September.
I remember being shocked to see that airfare to Europe was much more expensive than in the past. Out of curiosity, I checked some future flight dates with the Celebrity Air promotion to see if I could use this package. Since I don’t live near a port city, I included the extra cost of traveling to one of the port cities included in this promotion (ATL, BOS, CLT, DCA, DFW, EWR, FLL, IAD, IAH, JFK, LAX, MIA, ORD and PHL).
From my home airport, I found fares to IAD (Washington Dulles) for less than $250 round trip. Combined with the $699 discount Celebrity offers on these Athens cruises, that’s a significant savings over booking my own flights directly from my home airport.
Please note: I have not selected any flights whose connection time is uncertain. The use of COVID-19 allows for longer queues at registration and security screening. Remember that at some airports you have to go through security again when you leave the international terminal. I felt safer leaving some time for the transplant.
When you book your tickets with Celebrity, you can count on them to take you to Apex. Just knowing that Celebrity will take care of your flights will give you peace of mind. Be sure to check out this offer on Apex Athens flights.

Always a
Many of us haven’t sailed in a long time and may not be familiar with some of Celebrity Cruises’ new rules.
What I find particularly appealing is that all bookings made after November 2023 are eligible for Celebrity’s new Always Included program. All bookings include a classic drinks package, free WiFi for browsing and a tip. This is a great way to maximize the value of your cruise vacation! You can even change your service class for even more comprehensive benefits.
Check out this page that talks about the benefits.
